Institutional Animal Care and Use


University of Northwestern’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the care and welfare of animals used in any capacity within the institution.

University of Northwestern’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the care and welfare of animals used in any capacity within the institution. The IACUC reviews all projects involving animals to ensure that they are justified by their benefits and to minimize any animal pain or suffering that might occur. The IACUC ensures humane care and use of animals. This includes animals used in classroom activities as well as research. The IACUC is comprised of faculty, staff, students, and the local community.

IACUC Approval

Prior to conducting any research that involves animals at Northwestern, complete the Animal Use in Research Application and submit it electronically to Dr. Terri Mattila at tlmattila@unwsp.edu. Requests pertain to any animal that will be physically handled or physically manipulated in any way, including wild animals in their natural habitat.
